Simple Beef Rub

It is easy to make and take great pride in while your friends are enjoying your BBQ is making your rubs. I often pretty lazy and will grab one of my premade commercial rubs out of the rub bucket we keep on the top shelf of our pantry. When there is a time when I will want to make a Simple Beef Rub for brisket or my Beef Short Ribs; and this recipe is four ingredients and packs a lot of flavors.

One thing to remember if you do decide to make your rubs are high-quality ingredients are essential. Also, using the proper coarseness is necessary too. Using a black pepper that is too coarse will add to much heat, but using a black pepper that is not coarse enough won’t add flavor.

With the black pepper I use, Watkins Gourmet Pure Ground Black Pepper is the best! I use this because is just the perfect ground for seasoning beef. It has some heat without being overpowering. It’s on the expensive side, but when cooking with it, especially in my mom’s mashed potatoes, it gives them a great flavor profile.

Just as it was with the black pepper, getting the right kind of salt makes all the difference. I highly recommend getting coarse ground kosher salt. The only exception to the rule of buying higher quality ingredients is the salt you use. I recommend just plain old Morton Coarse Kosher Salt. It’s cheap and gets the job down. Please, whatever you do, don’t sub out for Sea Salt. Sea Salt is saltier in the same measurements as this recipe for this Simple Beef Rub. I don’t want you to ruin your beef by making it too salty.

The next two ingredients are Garlic Powder and Onion Powder. Because these are extremely important, buy higher quality brands. Doing this will make it so that after hours or working on your beef, you can still have a little complexity of flavors by taste the onion and garlic. Once again, if you have the option, go and get Watkins Gourmet Spice Organic Garlic Powder. Its darker tasting and will withstand hours of smoke. I buy the same brand for my Onion Powder. I love and highly recommend getting Watkins Gourment Spice Organic Garlic Powder. You won’t regret spending the extra cash on these spices. I’m positive that you will love them so much that you will use them on everything!

For storage, I recommend getting some good-sized shaker bottles, similar to this storage container I found on Amazon. If this Simple Beef Rub is closed and stored well, it will last months in your pantry. This rub recipe is enough Easy Beef Rub to do 3-4 briskets.

As a side note, feel free to experiment with some with this recipe. There is no right or wrong way to season your beef! But if you like something with a little heat, add 1-2 teaspoons of cayenne pepper. If you want to add some red color to your bark, add some paprika. It is 100% ok to make this recipe your own and to your liking!

Thanks for checking out this post, and please leave a comment or let me know what you thought of this rub!
